Incidental Exercise
When I first started working with Josh, I was highly entertained by his stories of doing pushups in an elevator, lunges while carrying a large bag of dog food, and other forms of what we came to call “incidental exercise.” As Josh explained it, “if you are in an elevator and have a few moments while the elevator is moving, why not get in a few pushups?”Interesting question! And why not throw that 30 lb bag of dog food over your shoulder and do lunges all the way home from the pet food store? In the time I have known Josh, he has also run to do errands on a number of occasions (rather than walking, driving or taking the bus). Altogether, these moments of “incidental exercise add up and give him an extra energy boost during the day.Josh’s fiance, Claire, has her own version of incidental exercise. While waiting at a bus stop, for instance, Claire seizes the moment to work on balance exercises. Hey, why not?Anytime can be a good time to exercise. Small bursts of activity throughout your day can boost your energy, get you somewhere faster, inspire those around you and perhaps create a few smiles! :-)
