Trainer or Coach?

I find it really interesting these days to consider the wording - whether someone is a personal trainer or someone is a coach. Within the “fitness industry,” the term “personal trainer” has been the norm for years. My title is “Certified Personal Trainer.” However, of late, many people have substituted the word “Coach” as a way of, I think, distinguishing how they actually work with their clients. I appreciate this because I think there is a lot of coaching that goes on within the personal training relationship - and perhaps indeed “coach” is a better term to describe what is happening. There is also educating, collaboration and mutual learning and development.

What are your thoughts on this? When you work with a fitness professional, are you looking for “training,” “coaching,” “education,” “collaboration,” “support,” “accountability?” I find that I am often in multiple roles with the people I work with and it all comes together in an effort to help someone make progress in the areas in which they are trying to grow.
